What Peptides Actually Do

The word "Peptides" is on almost every serum bottle on the market today. That's precisely the problem—when an ingredient is everywhere, the term starts to mean almost nothing. Let's cut through the beauty industry noise: here is what peptides actually are, what the clinical research truly supports, and why an impressive percentage on the label matters far less than what is inside the bottle.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up the proteins your skin is built from, including collagen and elastin. In skincare, they function as messengers: small enough to reach the lower layers of skin, and structured to signal specific instructions to the cells that live there.

That's a real mechanism, not a marketing concept. But "contains peptides" has become such a common claim that it's stopped telling you much on its own. What actually matters is which peptides, at what concentration, and what they're being asked to do.

The four real types

Peptides used in skincare generally fall into four categories, based on what they're designed to do:

  1. Signal peptides — these communicate directly with skin cells (fibroblasts), prompting them to produce structural proteins like collagen and elastin. Most of the peptides you'll recognize by name, including the ones we use, fall into this category.
  2. Carrier peptides — these transport trace elements like copper into skin, supporting repair and antioxidant processes. Copper peptides are the best-known example.
  3. Neurotransmitter-inhibitor peptides — these work more like a topical, temporary version of a muscle-relaxing injectable, softening the look of expression lines by limiting the signal that triggers small facial muscle contractions.
  4. Enzyme-inhibitor peptides — these block the enzymes (matrix metalloproteinases, or MMPs) responsible for breaking down existing collagen, helping to preserve what your skin already has.

Most well-formulated peptide products lean on signal peptides as the foundation, sometimes paired with one of the other types. That's the approach we took.

Which ones we chose, and why

We use two peptides: Hexapeptide-11 and dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline, both signal peptides, both included at levels meant to actually do something.

Hexapeptide-11 is a well-studied signal peptide shown, in research on human dermal fibroblasts, to activate pathways involved in collagen and hyaluronic acid production, while also showing antioxidant activity and protecting fibroblasts from oxidative stress. We include it at 2% — a concentration chosen because it's within the range shown to be active, not a token amount.

Dipalmitoyl hydroxyproline is an oil-soluble, lipid-modified version of hydroxyproline — one of the amino acids collagen itself is made of. Its oil solubility helps it penetrate more efficiently, and it works through two mechanisms at once: supporting the skin's own collagen-related signaling, while also inhibiting elastase, an enzyme that breaks down elastin over time.

Why the concentration matters more than the count

This is worth being direct about: a lot of peptide serums list several peptides on the label, positioned so far down the ingredient list that the actual concentration is negligible. Ingredient order on a label roughly tracks concentration — a peptide listed near the very end of a long list, after preservatives and stabilizers, generally isn't there at a level that does much.

It's not really a numbers game. A serum with one or two peptides at a real, active concentration will typically outperform one listing five peptides at trace amounts. We built ours around that principle — fewer peptides, chosen deliberately, included at levels that match what the research actually used.

How peptides fit into a routine

Peptides are genuinely easy to work into an existing routine:

  1. Apply to clean skin, before moisturizer. Morning or evening both work — peptides aren't light-sensitive or time-of-day dependent the way some other actives are.
  2. They layer well with almost everything. Vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, and bakuchiol are all compatible; there's no need to separate peptides from the rest of your routine.
  3. Give it real time. Peptides work by influencing cell signaling and gene expression, which is a gradual process. Most people notice change over 4 to 8 weeks of consistent use, not overnight.
  4. Keep expectations grounded in what peptides actually do. This is skin-health, longevity-focused support — not a substitute for injectable treatments, even where a peptide's mechanism (like neurotransmitter-inhibitor types) is loosely inspired by them.

Frequently asked questions

Do more peptides in a formula mean better results?

Not necessarily, and often the opposite. A formula with a couple of peptides at a real concentration tends to outperform one with a long list at trace amounts. The number on the label is a marketing detail; the concentration is the actual variable that matters.

Can I use peptides alongside retinol, bakuchiol, or vitamin C?

Yes, peptides are among the more cooperative actives in skincare and layer well with most others. A reasonable general practice is to avoid combining them in the same application with high-concentration exfoliating acids or very acidic vitamin C formulas, since pH extremes can affect peptide stability.

How long before I see results?

Because peptides work by influencing gene expression and cell signaling rather than acting immediately, most people see meaningful change starting around 4 weeks, with continued improvement through 8 weeks or more of consistent use.

Are peptides safe during pregnancy or for sensitive skin?

Peptides are generally considered low-risk and are broadly well tolerated, including in sensitive skin. As with any new product, check with your healthcare provider if you're pregnant or nursing, and patch test if your skin tends to react.

The bottom line

Peptides earned their place in skincare because the mechanism is real — they're not a trend ingredient. But the category has been diluted by products using the word without the substance behind it. The question worth asking isn't whether a serum "has peptides." It's which ones, at what concentration, and whether that number was chosen to perform or just to fit on a label.
